it mapped one of the mem card readers in my workstation as C: and mapped the primary OS drive as G:...any way of changing them around without reinstalling? if i do have to reinstall, is simply reinstalling over (after disconnecting all these mem readers) the best way of doing it or do i have to completely reformat and nuke it? thanks

Note: That's exactly why you don't install WinXP with peripherals like that installed (Firewire, USB HDs, Media Readers).

thanks for the article jonny, just found it myself as well.

ronin, yeah, i thought it would be smarter, but i guess i shouldve been smarter and not assume that!

when i install windows i dont have any drives besides my boot drive connected.

iv done it in the past and had the same problem.

I made this mistake once when I was building a computer for a client. The case came with a USB card reader, which I plugged in before installing Windows (oops). As such, Windows was installed on some goofy drive letter. Since I hadn't done anything important with the PC yet, I just did a quick reinstall, after disconnecting the card reader device. Once Windows was installed, I reconnected the card reader and let Windows detect it.

nbarb99,

i think i might just have to do that. ill give the reg editing a try first, but the ms article advises against doing it if windows was installed as that drive. the problem is i dont know what a reinstall will do to all apps/settings in there... id rather not have to reinstall them as well.

run nt backup now, install windows on the c drive and then restore. programs are safe then. takes a bit but..
