I am about to reinstall Win XP Professional for the third time. On the two previous installs, the system would run perfectly for ~2weeks. After that, I would get BSOD and forced reboots whose frequency increased with time. There were not hardware or software installs before these problems occurred and I'm not using any non-approved drivers. I'm using the standard XP drivers for my hardware with the exception of the latest NVIDA drivers for my video card. I haven't installed the latest VIA 4-in-1 drivers and didn't know if doint so might help.
I know that I have some bad hard drive sectors. Whenever I run a surface scan after an install, errors are found in the Windows directory and repaired. I hoped that the location of the bad sectors would be "remembered" when I did the second reinstall but they were not as best I can tell. Previously, I had booted under Win98 SE (its on a separate drive) FDISKed and started over.
First, does this sound like a hard drive problem and if so, how do I reinstall XP in a way that allows the bad sectors to be avoided on the inital installation? Second, could this be a driver's issue and might the latest 4-in-1 driver help. Any suggestions???
(I'm not sure if this is needed but here's the system info: XP drive is running NTFS with a second hard drive that is running FAT32. The mobo is an IWILL KK-266R with 1.333ghz chip. Memory is a single stick (256mb) of PC150 CAS 2. Hard drives are IBM - 60gb and 80gb. Video card is a Leadtek DH Pro. Linksys NIC and USR 56k modem (ISA).)
