win XP: how to load drivers in safe mode?

I have problem shutting down win XP. But no problem shutting down after starting in safemode. So I assume it's a problem with 1 or more drivers. Now I need to figure out which one(s). There are 40 drivers that weren't installed when I booted in safe mode. What is the best way to test these?

I was thinking it would be most efficient to iteratively load half of the drivers and narrow down the problem that way but don't know the logistics of how to do it.

Another question (which displays my ignorance): looking at the log from when I booted in safe mode there are a number of drivers that have multiple entries (e.g., 41 lines stating "Did not load driver Video Codecs"). XP doesn't load a driver multiple times does it? Is XP just considering a driver that many times (and not loading it each time) in safe mode?

Any help would be appreciated!

Where does the system hang? Does it bring up an End Task box? Could be a program rather than a driver...

Have you tried inserting the Install CD-ROM and doing a system compatibility check to make sure that all hardware, drivers and software is XP compatible?

Corm- thanks for taking the time to respond.

No problem I can see until shutting down. Instead of shutting down & powering off, I get the Blue Screen and following message: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Additional info on the screen:

*** STOP: 0x000000D1 . . .

*** kdbclass.sys -Address F8866941 base at F8866000, . . .

Does this info help at all?

Thanks.

This is the keyboard driver. If you search yahoo groups you'll find a number of threads on it and XP crashes. One interesting quote I found for you "I updated my mouse driver (Logitech) and the problem went away.". Any chance you have a logitech mouse?

Is it a USB Keyboard and/or mouse?....I have found IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL messages to often relate to USB Problems, do you have appropriate USB Filter drivers for motherboard installed and like bsobel mentioned, get latest keyboard and mouse drivers....maybe also try uninstalling these drivers.

Bill- I do have a Logitech USB mouse. Will try to update the drivers to see if that helps. I've got a MS keyboard (not USB), pretty sure I didn't load any drivers for it, just used the XP ones.

Corm- what are USB Filter drivers for the motherboard? I've got an MSI KT3 Ultra2 btw.

All- thanks for the input.
