The windows xp home got corrupted and I took it out and put it on another computer but when I try to access the Documents and settings folder so I can retrieve the data I get and error that I can not access the files. Under properties it is marked as read only and I can not take it off. The data was not encripted. Also the original disk had xp home the computer I puted it on to retireve the dat has pro is that the problem?

very helpful if you dont know how to do it..

if you boot in safe mode, you will have access to everything on the drive. you can now right click the folder and set ownership of the drive under properties to global, or whatever the most global setting looks to be =)

You can most likely ignor the read only attribute. I don't think it has anything to do with this. See:

326549 You Cannot View or Change the Read-Only or System Attribute of Folders
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=326549

If you are still unable to read the files after taking ownership you probably have a filesystem problem on that drive. Run a chkdsk /F on it.

Thanks a ot for the help. I went into safe mode as Hoppa said and I let the administrator took ownership and it worked fine. I was able to get all the data :)
