Win XP Home, can I install it on both my machines with only one disk?

I going to have 2 systems, I bought Win XP Home (OEM) primarily for my new computer. But I would also like to put it on my current computer. I know there is the hardware verification thing, but will it be possible to do a clean install of Win XP on both systems? You would think it would be legal if I am using it for my own personal use.

thanks

Easy answer: it's only legal if you purchase a second license. If you don't plan on purchasing another license (or copy) of XP, then it's considered piracy.

You would put the disk in and boot from it...

This thread needs to be locked, it's obvious your only interest is to circumvent license agreement and steal a copy of the OS.

Yes, but wont MS have the info on the serial and think I am trying to install it on a different computer when its really the same computer, I just had to reformat?

If you reinstall on the same machine, XP will create the same code again, Therefore activation will go through.. However, If you install on another machine, It will create a different code. That is when it goes
NOT!!

I understand your wishes here and it should be ok..But alas, It is not. Buy another OEM version for the second machine from somewhere like newegg for $89 or so and call it good.

Ok, I'm starting to understand this now. So If you want to upgrade your computer, adding new parts, it'll give you a different activation code, therefore, leaving you hanging without a working OS. I heard if you only change a few things it'll still work, but if you ever do a major upgrade your screwed.......

If the current machine is running Win 98/Me you are supposed to use WinXPHome/Pro upgrade version..not OEM (can be bought from Staples.com for under $100 with coupon..)..
a customer must first have a full operating system installed on their machine before they are eligible to acquire an upgrade license for Windows 95/98, Windows NT Workstation, Windows 2000 Professional, or Windows XP Professional
..the license is (why anyone want to do the following..
rolleye.gif
) supposed to be backwards compatible..i.e. buy license(XPHome/Pro..) downgrade to previous versions.....OEM is for new builds only
Use of Previous Version of Software (Windows XP Professional only). This OEM EULA consists of a license to use one copy of Windows XP Professional. If you acquire PCs licensed for Windows XP Professional, then you are licensed to use identified previous versions of Windows Operating System Product(s) in lieu of Windows XP Professional (Microsoft® Windows® 2000 Professional, Microsoft® Windows NT® 4.0 or Microsoft® Windows® 98 (Second Edition). If you choose this option, neither Microsoft nor the PC Manufacturer is obligated to supply you with copies of previous versions and neither Microsoft nor the PC Manufacturer is responsible to provide product support for PCs on which these previous versions are installed. You may only use one copy of Windows XP Professional or one copy of one of the identified previous versions. Under this downgrade option, you may not transfer your unused copy of Windows XP Professional to any third party, but may reinstall Windows XP Professional on the same PC it came licensed with, provided the previous (downgraded) version has been removed from the PC.
Therefore using a WinXPPro OEM for a pre-existing build (unless it came with said build)..is not legal under MS' EULA and as far as multiple installs go it is 1 (one) license per machine
Can I make a second copy of my operating system software, such as Windows 98, for my home, work or portable computer?

No. The right to make a second copy of a Microsoft software product only applies to some application products and not to operating system software.
subject to your OS' EULA. Sourced from herehere.

There is a point(only known by your OS..) where and up to..you can change components..incrementally or all at once..

then you will have to re-activate the OS by a toll-free phone call..relatively painless and surprisingly quick..

I didn't buy the upgrade version b/c I wanted to do a nice, clean install of XP on a formatted hard drive.

Which you can do with the 'upgrade' version. You just have to stick in your previous version of Windows for a few seconds as proof that you own a qualifying product to upgrade from.

Y buy an upgrade when you can get an OEM.... whoi cares about the EULA, MS doesn't care as long as you have a license.
