While installing WinXP on a Dell (replacing bad hard drive) it would stop at 34 minutes remaining. The little light bar still went and the messages would keep cycling but nothing else. I found that if I unpluged the USB mouse everything would work fine.

This was my first experience with this problem even though I've installed WinXP a good number of times and on machines that used USB mice.

i had similar problem at the 34 minute too but mine turned out to be bad soundcard. i pulled it out and install went fine after that. i would assume that is the part of the install where it installs devices and any that are bad are going to stop the install. just a guess though :)

Very interesting...I was helping a neighbor with his Dell last week. I tried doing a Windows repair install and it hung at 34 mins. The thing wouldn't boot at all after that and had to reformat.

I've had the same problem with eMachines with USB cardreaders. I've got hundreds of Dells with USB mice and haven't experienced that problem, though.

Google is your friend. "34 minutes xp install" found this in under a minute.
