Win XP DVD playing problem

Just bought a 42" Vizio HDTV,1080p, and am using it as monitor on my X2/3800+ w/ nVidia 7600gs [via DVI->HDMI cable]. All fine... until we decided to watch :Africa: Serengeti IMAX". Color was a mess, from green skies to purple blotches (fog) scattered about. I fiddled extensively w/ the unfamiliar TV controls and reduced problems from unwatchable to just pathetic.

I've watched a few movies on the prior22" monitor w/o problems -- probably before upgrading to x2 processor FWIW. And I'd watched a few minutes of a mostly black & white (snow on rocks) movie just before w/o problems. This was entirely unexpected.

I did begin to think the red blotches were a red-shift of images on the screen, as if the red component was wildly misplaced -- perhaps a 1/4-screen away from the other colors!

That was with MS Media player (11.0.5721.5230) -- which I presume is current, as I update regularly. So, I switched to Nero's player -- and the problem was Solved! Happy, happy... joy, joy.

This prompts these questions:
1) What was the problem? The Codec?
2) Is there a "best" player recommended for XP?
3) Are there alternative/better Codecs for MP?

While the Nero player was quite watchable, it seemed overly contrasty and saturated -- all shadows went black and most colors seemed too rich -- despite playing with the settings. I haven't noticed this in TV programs, but I've only used the set-up for a few days. Hmmm... on the other hand, in coping with the miserable first player, I may have maimed the settings and failed to completely reset them as I switched to Nero.

There's much I have to learn about setting this TV up yet -- and I have the AVIA and DVE(?) setup discs, but haven't used them yet (as I can't find where I set them down!!).

no problem for me, i use Media Player Classic, and Intel Video DVD Player

and you can download any missing codecs here

http://www.free-codecs.com/

I use Matroska Pack + Real alternative + QuickTime alternative

and i can see 99.99% of all my recordings, DVDs, and files
