uuh...oops, wasn't supposed to be blank...
anyway, here are the specs for the machine:
Mobo:
BioStar M7NCD Pro
CPU:
Athlon XP 2500+
Mem:
PC2700 1 gig
HD:
Maxtor 120 gb UATA 133 HD
CD:
TDK VeloCD
16x DVD
Video:
ATI Radeon 9700 pro at 8x AGP on, and fastwrite
Power:
300 W generic

here's the problem:
I'm trying to install XP Corp, but everytime i try to install, it crashes.
The exact point of crashing is when it asks you to hit ENTER to install or R for repair. I have no idea what's going on.

Windows XP "Corporate", the version that all the pirates seem to distribute, isn't very stable to begin with. I once installed it right before XP came out, and it was a piece of crap. I have since graduated to XP Pro. The version you actually buy in stores is much more stable. Not to mention you can use Windows Update past SP1.

Just my opinion though.

What if this is a work machine? Then he didn't pay for the retail cd because the company supplied a corporate cd to him. Should we all be thinking so negatively about everyone else? Doesn't a feel person deserve the benefit of the doubt? And if not, as humans, shouldn't we try to rise above the crap and give people the benefit of the doubt when we can?

DamageInc, please get some of your information right! ;) Using the FCKGW (Devils0wn) key, you can't get SP1. There are some keys now that you can use SP1 plus all the current updates (so i've heard). Also, I used that when XP first came out (question, do you buy a car without test driving it? a sofa without seeing if it's comfortable and fits your decor? clothes without trying them on? No? Right, then i'm perfectly ok to try out some software) and it's no less stable than the version I bought from the shops a couple of months later. It is in fact identical, apart from a couple of files changed to not require it to be activated.

Now, assuming that he is actually using a corp version provided to companies, then your admins should be able to help. My first thing would be to try another PSU, as a generic 300W is pushing it for that setup. Next, run Memtest86 to make sure your memory is OK. Then, try unplugging all unneeded peripherals/devices that aren't required to run setup (ie leave CPU, gfx, 1 stick of memory, hdd and a cd drive)

If you do have the pirate version, then tough luck, you got a bad copy.

What if this is a work machine?

Then most likely he shouldn't be doing the install himself and he should have a helpdesk or IS department to call for help.
