win xp boot up wierdness

here's one i've never seen before ... (but then again, aren't they all?!). this has happened three times now; the first time my os got corrupted shortly after and had to be reinstalled. i thought i had diagnosed the hd as the problem; now it has happened again twice is a single day after the system being stable for several weeks. what am i talking about?

on boot up, the machine gets as far as the win xp splash screen, with the bar of moving blue dashes. then it hangs - no moving dashes, have to do a hard reset to reboot. the wierd thing, the thing i'd never seen before, is that the screen is very faint - not the full colors like you're used to seeing, but very faint and washed out image - almost like in the old days when an image would get burned into the crt.

i don't even have a clue where to begin debugging this one. any ideas?

thanks,

joe

Sounds like a hardware issue. First and easiest thing to test is the RAM with Memtest.

Hardware problem for sure. I would check the HD with Powermax or whatever utility that drive supports. If all the components are the same as before, and the drive is good, I would suspect the motherboard. If the ram is new, I would suspect the ram.
