win xp and usb 2.0 problem

ok, so i return to my dorm after winter break today and plugs in my usb 2.0 harddrive and whenever i access big files like movies from the usb 2.0 hd, explorer.exe starts using 100% of my cpu, has this happened to other people. can anyone explain this or point me in the right direction?
