Win XP and NIC question

I have two computers directly connected to each other. I'm not using a hub or anything. When ever the other computer is off, my computer, which is using winxp and a belkin nic, an icon on the task bar will pop up saying the the cable has been disconnected. That is kind of annoying. How do I stop it from doing that? Thanks for any help,.
 
Go to Network connections and properties on your local area network connection. Uncheck the "show icon in taskbar when connected"
