Win XP and awful net connections

i was thinking about buying XP but ive seen lot of people complaining about their internet connections going down the pan after "upgrading" to XP, in particular regarding ping & packetloss in multiplayer games (well it is a gaming site; rtcw.co.uk) - 56k, ASDL and cable modem users all having problems. I'm not even going to consider upgrading to XP if its going to give a worse connecton, and i'm hoping youd be able to help my gaming buddies. There was a mention of XP possibly constantly accessing something while online; some tweak regarding maximum bandwidth in the registry; and turning off "auto update".

i did a search of FAQ, operating system, technical help and networking forums but came up with nothing :(
any help appreciated...

I have no difference in the pings I get (TFC and CS mostly) with XP....

I did have connectivity issues with Comcast until I disabled the 'QoS packet scheduler' in the NIC properties
I seemed to have trouble when playing on more than one computer at the same time (seperate IPs)
(never really verified cause and effect, but life is good now, so I never put QoS back... don't know what it does)

could it be that XP has now been blamed for everything? j/k

I've experienced the opposite actually. I am on dsl behind a linksys firewall, and my transfer rates actually went up going from 2k to XP.

when i first got xp mine were slower than 98 .

but i added a command line prompt at the suggestion of a respectable at'r (sorry name slips me unlike mag sitting here on my desk)and a 'QoS packet scheduler' enabled set to value 0 from another source (maximumpc dick mathews lol)and my
internet connections are sweet and fast.

actually speed is almost double using xp over 98

the instant messenger crap was causing huge conflicts with ie 6.0 and it would crash internet explorer every other screen or hang loading. tried reinstalling reformatting repairing but
the bugs were allieviated by dismissing the messenger lol
best dang tip ive ever gotten here and right on the mark. AT=spot on Advice and great forum

hope this helps

It's amazing that I haven't seen this tip referenced anywhere before. I was close to a complete format/re-install of WinXP because of my slow connection speeds and "connection with the server was reset" during downloads.

After turning off the QoS Packet Scheduler, life is good again. Why would Microsoft have such a P.O.S. in the connection stack?

QoS is used for critical networking, probably used in large corporations. It reserves bandwidth like 10% is the default I think for times when it is really needed for time dependent applications. You can turn it off in the network properties but I think there is also something to change in the registry. Do a search for disabling QoS services and you can find it. I am not sure if it is used on the home edition, but it is on the professional edition. =)
