Win XP and a motherboard swap!

Will it work? swapped out the motherboard. Same processor, etc. Switched from Abit SA6R to Tyan Trinity 400. Posts fine but I get a BSOD and no go? Any ideas?

even M$ recommends a reformat of the OS. i would back up data then reformat. no need for registry ghosts and incompatabilities to haunt you later down the road when you are further configuring your comp.

The last time I switched mainboards, I booted from the XP CD and did a "repair" install. This will overwrite you Windows directory but leave all your settings and other files intact. Then just do the Windows Update thing again and re-install your videocard, soundcard and other drivers.

it could also be because winxp uses "drivers" for the CPU, and you switched CPU's (AMD to *ntel, good god who would EVER want to do that ?!?!?!!!).

i've had no problems with mobo switches in winxp, even mobos with different chipsets, as long as the processor stayed the same (or similar, duron->athlon worked fine).

It basically removes all references to your hardware from 2k/xp. once you reboot it is as if you had just installed it and it redetects all you hardware. I use it before i ghost my box such that i can now install that image when i swap out the motherboard or have to get another pc running...

sysprep

Okay, as long as both motherboards use the same HAL and the same disk controller driver, it should work.

Realistically, doing a backup/restore is advised.

Do a full system backup, swap the motherboard, install XP, and restore. The restore will NOT overwrite your devices.

the problem i've run into with 2k/xp is when you changed boards from like via to intel chipsets. if you stay in the same line it seems to work fine. i'm gonna try that sysprep next time tho, sounds good.
