Win x64 or XP PRO?

I'm putting together a new system (Athlon 64) and am trying to decide if I should go with regular XP Pro or x64. I've checked around and there are 64 bit drivers for all the hardware I'm putting in and I'm not going to be putting much if any of my old software on it.

From what I've read, I should be fine going with x64. Is there anything I really need to watch out for with it? Would I be better off going with regular XP Pro for any reason?

Thanks.

Andy

Go with the X64
If yo'ure a stickler with price just get the XP Pro from teh hotdeals section for 110 bucks I believe

xp64 has driver problems people complain about all the time, so if you want a headache get it. Plus, there's really no reason to get it. 64-bit hasn't caught on yet. Not even your new software is 64-bit, so it's not like it's going to help.

Thanks for the info guys. From the sound of it, x64 is just something Microsoft has stuck together for people who really need 64bit support (not most people) and more trouble than it's worth for the majority of us.

I'm going to go with regular XP Pro.

Thanks again!

I've been using WinXP 64-bit and i've hated it....it's good for bragging rights I guess but the lack of drivers has been pissing me off.

If I get this RAID setup working tonight i'll go back to 32-bit for now...

I tried x64 for a while but the nvidia drivers were all beta at the time for both the video card and the motherboard. I switched to gentoo 64bit and I just use that now. Personally I couldn't see a reason anyways to use x64 (at the time only farcry had 64bit binarys and only avast had 64bit antivirus). Also I was getting weird network issues with 32bit apps like azureus where only 1 torrent could run at a time. Also a lot of games wouldn't run because the copy protection required a system driver that was only 32bit.

Although more and more stuff has 64bit support now (ut2004 recently got 64bit support on linux and windows). So if you have the ram and are willing to try I say go for it. Just do the driver research first.

There's really nothing wrong with Windows x64 itself. It's been as stable as the x32 edition was, but it's just the software/driver support for it is a bit lacking.

:frown:

Just getting a x64 system was the excitement and the possession of a new thing.

Trying to find all the x64 drivers took awhile and you really had to look.
Some drivers worked and finally now, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

There may be some tweaking and necessary adjustments yet, but WTH! All us nerds like a challenge, right! My brain hurts.

PlanetAMD64 and the ASUS websites had the major drivers.
Tried all, did that, removed whatever and tried again. It wasn't easy and if you don't have the PATIENCE, do WIN XP Pro!

Just lilke everyone said id stick with 32bit version unless your building a server with sql server x64 or a web server where you don't have to worry about application compatability.

Peace,
Ncage
