Win Server 2008

I'm thinking of building a small server using Windows Server 2008 R2. The problem I'm having is that I'm looking for a motherboard that supports Windows Server 2008 x64 that isn't a dedicated server motherboard to keep costs down. I was originally looking at the Asus P7P55D, P7P55D-E, or even the P7P55D-E Pro, however when I go to Asus website they don't list drivers for Windows Server though they list Server 2003 x64. Does anyone know if any of these 3 boards will work or will I have to go to a dedicated server board?

I don't have an answer to your specific question, but Im curious as to why you're 'willing to spend' ~$700 on an OS, but cheaping out on the mobo...?

Why not use Windows 7, or Linux?

I'm using the Server OS for Remote Desktop Services at my business.

If they have win7 x64 those drivers should work. Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 use the same code base. There's also a good chance that the 2003 x64 drivers will work.

I'm running a few VM's on Windows Server 2008 R2 which is running on an Intel atom dual core processor ATM. Seems ok so far, though I am not looking for extreme performance, only 'good enough'. It kinda sucks because I had to use 1 server 2003 license and 1 server 2008 R2 license since the Standard server only allows for 1+1 licensing while the professional version allows up to 4 VM's along with the host (1+4)

I'm running 2008 on an old A8N32-SLI Deluxe and it works fine. IIRC I had to use some Vista drivers and disable the on board game port and midi in the BIOS to quit getting nags to install drivers for them.

Hey, how did you get the licensing working? I try using the same CD key for my W2008 R2 VM's as the host (W2008 R2 Datacenter) and it doesn't seem to work - already activated message.

The key is from MSDNAA, so I'm wondering if there is a specific VM key they are supposed to give you.

I believe it is a different key type for VM's. I only use 1 key, and it activates without a problem.
