Is Win ME a good upgrade? I want to know if I should upgrade to Windows ME or stay with Win 98 SE. I heard there is some qualities to ME. Are the bugs ironed out?

WinME has many bugs, but it does help out in some areas. I personally hate ME and 2000, so i stick with 98SE, it's all up to you and your preferences.

I hate Winme, it is a constant source of frustatration. I will go back to 98SE asap and wont touch WinME again until a WinME SE version appears

its a total waste ...I hated it...hated it so much that I couldn't keep it for more than one hour....IE crashes like never before and it slows up your system considerabaly...the best OS setup acc. to me is win98se/ win2k pro......

I think WinME consumes far too many systems. Furthermore it takes over a lot of functions via Wizards. I can understand why this would appeal to relatively unsophisticated users but I found it incredibly frustrating.

IMHO, if you're going to use a Microsoft OS, there are two viable options: Win2K, which I currently use, or Win98SE, which I have on the wife's system.

Count me as one of those with a bad WinME experience... went back to Win2k after having some serious drivers issues.

ME is AWFUL! its a downgrade from 98. they take out the good features and add in crap ones.

I do like that new TCP stack though. Makes my downloads about 3-4 times faster.

98SE is still nice and stable and does everything I need an MS OS to do. All WinME attempts I've made so far have been painful, so I'm staying away until the first service pack (and you know there will be one!)

ME wasn't too bad as long as I stayed off the internet. It gave me nothing but headaches when dealing with internet apps (locking up, lagging, certain apps refused to open, etc). I put it on the kids machine and put 98SE back on mine and am now "test driving" Win2K.....just my experience.

WinME has been very stable for me. I did a clean install.

I had tried doing an upgrade but they never worked. I think that the attempted upgrades corrupted my Win98SE registry. The clean install did work.

If you go with WinME then the first thing to do is to turn off the "smart" menus on the task bar properties. The next step is to turn off scrollable menus which scroll start --> programs in a single column. Turn it off and get multiple colums. This is much easier then the Win98 registry changes that were required to get the same results.

I had the same problems as Heretik too, especially IE and apps not opening (and downloading not working). I figure if i do a critical update, that things would be fixed... but couldn't get the MS Update site to read my system. Thought maybe it was an IE problem, so thought maybe downloading IE 5.5 would help.. but couldn't get downloads to work. After all this i just decided to dump ME.

But i've met some people that migrated successfully. I just wouldn't spend all the $$$ for ME unless you know it'll successfully work on your rig.

I just finished my 2K, 98SE dual boot set up today. Seems to be working great. 2K sees all of my hardware, and causes no abnormalities. Just had to install it off of the bootable CD, it even made the nice menu for choosing which OS you want.

I don't foresee any problems with ME and it's a real advancement of Win95. Over 98SE, I'm not so sure as that has the utility to restore Windows system files manually...
