win ME to win 98 home network?

my labtop and desktop are both connected to the hub. The desktop runs on win ME and the labtop on win 98 2nd edition. I can see all the files and download them from my labtop. But when I try to see what my labtop is sharing from the desktop, I get a bunch of blank files that I can't download. Does anyone know what could be the problem? I have netbui, tcp/ip, and ipx/spx installed on both.

I suggest you remove IPX just on principle, as you're unlikely ever to use it... but anyhoo...

What are you using for IP addresses on both machines?
Are they in the same workgroup?
Is "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" installed on both adaptors?
(minor questions, but possibly important)

How are you supposed to be accessing the files? Have you got shared folders on both computers and can you browse the shares?
I'm not entirely sure, but I think ME has some kind of rudimentary firewall built in to protect itself. Have a look through the TCP/IP properties and disable anything claiming to be a firewall. If you use zone alarm or similar, try disabling that.
