Win Me problem

I have a laptop with Win Me on it and now it is having a very weird problem. I decided to update to IE6 through Microsoft update. I downloaded fine and installed but at the end of the install it said it wasn't installed successfully. I went back to download it again and it said I had IE6 already and for me to reboot. I rebooted and I got a message saying Explorer was messed up, I don't remember the exact message. My background is the only thing viewable on the screen, no icons will load. I hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete and nothing is running, the background just sits there.

I got curious and also have the laptop on a home network so I got on another computer to connect to the laptop. I can connect to the laptop and view all the files on the computer like normal. Is there a way I can use the Win ME restore feature by way of a LAN? This is the only thing I can think of that may get it working again.
