Win ME problem: windows protection error...unable to load file "NTKERN"

my friend moved his comp from his house to his cousins and when he started it up, it had that windows protection error. he can only get into safe mode no matter if he restarts or whatever. anyone know what to do? last resort is to format....he has too many mp3's and lots of C++ homework assignments in there.

Have you tried replacing the file? NTKERN.VXD

well I dont even know what that file is, and where to find it

I don't know if you can extract it from the CD, but for some reason that file is on my C:\Windows98\system (I'm dual booting).

See if you can find a copy, if not I'll post it somewhere for you.

i have a slightly similar problem.
my hardware:
promise fasttrack ata100 raid controller
tekram scsi controller
ibm hd
intel cpu
abit mb

i can install winme, up untill the point, when it does its first startup. on that, i get "windows protection fault, you must restart your comp" so i do, and after that, i can only get into safe mode. normal just gives me a black screen.
