Hi,

I know the Windows ME will be the last of the 9X series of operating systems but I was curious as to what MS will do after that. Will they indeed merge 9X OS with the Windows 2000 system or will there be an entirely new system (ie 64 bit OS, when the 64 bit systems come out)?

Cheers,

Another 9x OS of course.

Actually, I think 'Whistler' is the NT kernel consumer OS. I'm not sure about that, though. I think it's supposed to debut sometime next year, 2nd or 3rd quarter.

Don't hold your breath for a 64-bit OS. You will be using an x86 CPU far into the future. The accumulated legacy of the x86 chip family, all of those Windows programs, is too difficult to walk away from. Sad, but true.

"Whistler" looks like it will be renamed as "Windows.Net" - for some reason, Microsoft is entering a ".Net" spree. Rumour has it there will be two versions, (these are assumed names at this point) Windows.Net Professional - upgrade for Win2K, based on the NT kernal, aand Windows.Net Personal - upgrade from WinME, one more Os based on the 9x kernal.

What I read at Winsupersite impled that both versions of Whistler were based on Win2K, but that the personal one was wimpier (no dual processor support, no remote admin features, etc.).

I've read a bit about it here and there:

CNET article at http://news.cnet.com/news//0-1005-200-2246279.html?ag=st.cn.sr.ne.1

<<
After the scheduled release this fall of Windows Me, an operating system based on the original Windows 95 code and designed specifically for the home PC market, Microsoft will turn its attention to migrating all Windows products to the Windows NT code base. NT is widely thought to be more stable and secure than the Windows 9x code.

After Windows Me, Microsoft will release its next operating system--code-named Whistler--which will come in both home and business versions. It will be based on Windows NT, now known as Windows 2000. Following Whistler, Microsoft will release an operating system code-named Blackcomb.

Blackcomb will offer a redesigned user interface, Gates said, along with more "intelligent" features.

Eeek! Heaven help us! :Q :)

There's this too:

ZDNet article at http://www.zdnet.com/zdnn/stories/news/0,4586,2603708,00.html

<<
Gates told PDC attendees to expect Microsoft to ship Whistler in the second half of 2001, several months later than the company originally anticipated. Whistler is expected to be a fairly minor update to Windows 2000. A first Whistler beta is expected around September. The next major Windows release, code-named Blackcomb, isn't due out until the second half of 2002.

Microsoft is expected to offer Whistler in a variety of consumer and business flavors, as well as in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions.

And not a minute too soon. Five years since MS re-jigged the win 3 kernel and sold it to us as win95, seven yesrs since winNT came out, and some ten or eleven years since MS began work on winNT.
