Its unfortunate history is forgotten

Number one is printing en mass.
Our language would be dialects galore, just look at the 3rd world country of Philippines with 100 dialects.
(Newspapers, now spread the news around transfered via the intenet/or uplinked connection.)

Art I would say something like the Cystene chapel ceiling. The restoration uncovered detail and vibrant colors that were unimanagable.

Sports I would pick a part of history and say say what AMD can't mention cause it is in Germany and tension still runs high enough.
But history says that the US and others were really proud when a couple of black men put down Hitlers blond haired blue eyed wonders.

I figured it should have been Elvis, but I just don't like him at all, so I put MTV with the Buggles and Video Killed the radio star, which really did change the music industry forever. Music became a visual medium instead of just an aural medium after that.

I put Lance Armstrong, Bruce Lee, and Gunpowder. Because....to beat cancer and then beat all those Frenchies had to be tough. To start a film LEGACY with only 4 films, and gunpowder changed the shape and way the world worked dramatically. Yes Einstein was important but it hasn't profoundly changed the world like gunpowder has. Well that's just my $.02.

Q1: American boxer Cassius Clay defeats Sonny Liston; changes name to Muhammad Ali.

As he says, he is "the greatest"

Q2: American Al Jolson films the first talkie, "The Jazz Singer."

without this first step, we wouldnt have even seen Bruce, or Star Wars on film ;)
The talking film revolutionized entertainment as a whole, bringing forth movies as we know them, along with television.

Q3: Americans William Shockley and John Bardeen invent the transistor.

Light years ahead of the technology of the time, shockley and bardeen made it possible for you to be sitting in front of a computer right now.

Even hotter if you live in France -- you can get paid for entering.
For residents of France only: Upon written request, AMD will reimburse you U.S.$0.40 per entry for the cost of your Internet connection time. Send your written request to AMD Breakout Performance Survey, Mail Stop 593, AMD, 5204 East Ben White Blvd., Austin, TX 78741, U.S.A.
There's a downside of course -- if that's the case, odds are you're French. :D

I added to the Science field:
1886 Tesla invents the polyphase system used in the development of alternating current (AC) electricity.

If it wasn't for him, we might be running our AMD mobos with DC generators in our house.

Observations:

  • Tschaikovsky and the 1812 Overture--in classical music circles, he's generally regarded as a top-notch, second-rate composer. (True! :))
Ricky Martin and La Vida Loca? Puh-leeze...

Potential winners who are Residents of Canada will be required to correctly answer, without assistance of any kind, whether mechanical or otherwise, a mathematical, time-limited, skill-testing question to be administered by telephone, email or mail, in order to win the prize.

Bwahaha! Canadians have to take a math quiz to claim their prize!

What, are you trying to impress us with your classical music savvy? The real question is, given the following quote:
1812: Russian Tchaikovsky composes "Overture."

How did he compose it in 1812, when he wasn't born until 1840?! :p

And you people are depressing me with your arts/entertainment picks. Star Wars and Elvis? Jesus, get your asses off the couch and go out and get some culture.

Where the hell is Beethoven's Ninth?
