OK, I had hinted about this a few times, and here it is:

We are having a contest on "What would you do with 48 cores". The top entry wins a 4P Tyan motherboard, 4 12-core processors and a copy of Windows Server 2008 (Win 7 only supports up to 2 sockets.)

You can send in an entry as an essay, up to 500 words, you can send us a video, or you can write it in your blog. Unfortunately, because contest laws vary so wildly from country to country, this is a US-only contest :(

So think about how you would make the world a better place and let us know. As a tip, figuring out how to overclock this probably won't make the world better, but helping cure cancer would ;) (Just so you know what we are looking for)

The entry form (and 7 pages of rules) can be found linked in this blog:

http://links.amd.com/48Cores

Good luck, and change the world.

Sounds like a good contest.

I'm not a hardware or IT guy, but maybe you could host a similar contest for Llano. "What is your vision for Fusion" could be the question.

I'll let the Llano guy know.

Thanks. Hopefully we see him post on these message boards in the future.

I think a lot of us are really excited about the potential of AMD/ATI's Fusion to make the world a better place to live in.

Easy. I am the numer 25 person for F@H. This adds to my farm...

But what is this blog requirement ? it won't let me submit my essay with a blog URL ??

I think that is a programming bug. Just put www.amd.com in the slot and it should work.

Thanks, I am entered. Do you think that the number 25th contributor in the world to F@H would give me an edge ? And I own all that hardware, and pay for the electricity to run it myself. This would really help me out.

isn't GPU folding more cost effective?

would seem like a waste to have this thing just for folding...

I hope it goes to someone who can actually do something with it, someone who could also do something like F@H with the spare cycles

Yes, in my price range GPU is more cost effective. But 48 cores might save me on my electric bill, as the GPU's suck a lot of power, and cost more each month than CPU. So it would be a green contribution, if I got it.

It would be interesting to hear how Folding@home contributes, correlates, or integrates with other approaches to disease treatment.

Maybe you find something unique, original and truthful and they are able to use it in their marketing campaign? Lots of times people and corporations have a hard time deciding on how to donate money. (Lets see do I send a check in to XYZ charity? or is being charged extra on my electrical Bill a better use of my resources?)

Also are there any efforts into making Folding@home tax deductable? Is it worth it to society to allow tax deductions on Folding efforts?

I would love to deduct it. $300/month for electricity alone is $3,600 per year ! Not to mention the $5,000/year in hardware upgrades...But my sister, who is a CPA says it would be a long uphill battle to even try and justify it to the IRS. I will just pay the tax....

What about Folding farms? Do they qualify for non-profit status?

Is buying new hardware specifically for Folding farms a cost effective endeavor?

(People donating money want to know the details)

P.S. You don't have to answer my questions in this thread.
