i have a computer in the house that is still w98 not second edition that has multiple user profiles. there is the default and then four others. this was the original one in the house that everybody used before i started building others. the upgrade to second edition never got done when it should have and now two of the users have grown up and moved on, but occasionally still need something stored on that rig. despite the age of the windows installation (1999) this machine has had constant upgrades and modifications to keep it usable. there are actually very few original components left but the original installation is still the essentially the same.
so here's my question, can i use the 98se upgrade disc i have to upgrade this to se without losing all of the multiple users profiles and their associated menus, desktops, document lists? i read the read me files in the setup text on the disc and it doesn't address the question. i did do a w98se full install on another drive for this machine to see what the difference would be like and it looks like it is worth doing, one of the things i wanted out of it myself was access to media player 9 instead of 7.? and to be able to install the "unofficial service pack 2" before going to windows update for everything else. but if i can't do the update on the 98 drive without losing all of the user material i have to leave it the way it is. there is just too much other peoples stuff to ditch it all.
so if anyone has done the se upgrade from the upgrade cd with multiple users listed at the windows login screen please post back with the remembered results. what i am really interested in is whether or not the items mentioned remain intact or have to be rebuilt.
thanks
i know this is really retro material, but i'm hoping someone that did it years ago remembers how it comes out.

When we upgraded ours, the most profiles on any Win98 PC was two. But the upgrade didn't change those. You should be safe enough.

Try cloning the drive, with 2 different yoots, then, upgrade.

I personally have never had a prob with the upgrade from 98 to 98SE.
Its basically like installing a SP for 98, except less hassle.
