I would like the opinions of some posters. I have been fooling around with computers since win 3.0.
For the past many years I have settled on Win 98se. I have never use ME or Win 2000 and have
only tried Win XP Home once and had a bad experience. My question is: I am going to build ( what
I hope will be my last computer ) using some of the latest hardware. Asus A7N8X MB, AMD XP 2600 to 2800,
Corsair PC3200, Bla, Bla you get the idea. All I use a computer for is tooling around the web and doing
flight sims ( CFS1,2,3 etc ). What is your recommendations for an operating system. I still have about 3
copies of Win 98se left over from my computer building days and it would be a plus if I could use one of
them. Do I give up anything by using SE and how much difference in my simm proformance will I see
between 2000 and XP ( AGH )

Thanks
erg

I see no problems with 98se. I know people say win9x is unstable, but I never get lockups or blue screens. Since you already have 3 copies of 98se and win2k is over 100 bucks, I say use 98se, you can always install another OS later. I usually re install about once a year anyways, no matter what OS.

If you have the extra cash and time to play around and a good firewall (physical router/home firewall & software/desktop based), then give 2000 or XP a try. Otherwise, if you are comfortable with Win98SE, stick with it.

Personally (keyword here), if I was in your shoes and I had a bit of extra $, time (could spend a lot of time troubleshooting and researching how to secure your OS0, and was keen on learning a new OS (behind a firewall for obvious security reasons), then I would try Win2K or XP.

Enjoy!

Thanks for those reply's. I was just worried about how big a hit I would take ( if any ) by sticking with 98se. If I cant tell the difference with the eye, then I will be happy. Not concerned with benchmarks or anything like that. Just want to fly, shoot and kill without stutters and glitches :).

Thanks again

you can create 2 partitions, 1st with win98 and 2nd with winxp and test it out to see which you like. Stick with win98se if you have no problems after you installed it on the new hardware.

With the new system you plan to build, I would personally go with XP. Turn off all the eye candy (allthough you might like it;) ) to make it look like what you are used to (Win9x gui). But, if you allready have Win98SE and are comfortable with using it, then by all means use it. Worst comes to worst, you can allways dual-boot if you get the itch to do so.

I would go with XP,reason being 98 is an excellent gaming OS but is getting old now , so how long do you think Microsoft will continue to support it?

I do not know if it is in my head or not, but my gaming performance seemed to decline when I switched one computer from Win98SE to WinXP (clean install).
