Hello All,

Just a quick question...I'm currently running win98(not second ed) and have just purchased XP Pro. Has ANYONE out there "updated" from win98 and had everything work? Or do I have to try and backup all my critical files on cd and reformat and do a fresh install?
Any info will be much appreciated and I'm sure save me a ton of time and effort in the long run! Please advise at will.

Thankx,

MrCairo

Do that. You're upgrading from a 4+ year old OS, you dont' want any trace of it left on your system.

I have done it both ways with 98SE and haven't had any problems. I would agree with Pipboy though, a fresh install is probably the best way to go.

Don't do an in-place update/upgrade.

Always format and install fresh.

Thanks All! I did a "fresh install" and everything went perfect! My boot time is a 1/3 of what it use to be! And I havn't had to hit the reset button at all. Did the windows critical updates ( which installed the new sp1 files eventhough they weren't called that) and everything "still" runs great!

So thanks for the tips!

There's more to service pack 1 than just those fixes. SP1 wraps up all of the fixes that were avalible before its release, plus a whole bunch of new stuff. Go into the system applet in your control panel. if it doesn't say "service pack 1" there, then you don't have it.
