Ok guys, I?m practically ripping my hair out with frustration at this one, and could really use a bit of help from anyone out there!

Yesterday I went out and purchased the following, with the aim of networking my 2 Windows 98SE PC?s together:

1 Unex 8 port fast Ethernet hub
2 Unex 10/100Mbps PCI adapter NICs
2 25ft Cat5 UTP cables

I plugged the cards in the PC?s and everything installed fine, no conflicts etc showing up. I then plugged the hub in and took a cable from each card into the hub. The lights on the hub are flashing away (on the ports where the cables are plugged in, so I presume the cable is fine).

I then went about installing all the necessary protocols so that I have the following under network properties for each machine:
Client for Microsoft networks
Microsoft family logon
Dial Up adaptor
ND01X Ethernet/fast Ethernet PCI bus adapter
TCP/IP-> dial up adapter
TCP/IP -> ND01X Ethernet/fast Ethernet PCI bus adapter
File and printer sharing for Microsoft networks.

Now, I?ve managed in the past to network these 2 PC?s together fine (albeit without a hub and with BNC cabling). I?ve made sure to enable file and printer sharing and make sure all the drives are shared. I?ve also assigned each PC with a static IP address under ?TCP/IP -> ND01X Ethernet/fast Ethernet PCI bus adapter?.

I?ve gone through the settings to make sure they?re the same on each machine as well (apart from the last digit of the IP).

Problem: At the moment, each machine is only able to see itself under network neighborhood. Sometimes, 1 of the machines will show the other machine as well, but when I try to browse it, it says the following:

\\xxxxx is not accessible

The computer or sharename could not be found. Make sure you typed it correctly, and try again.

A difference I?ve noticed as well, is that when I double click ?entire network? on the first machine, nothing shows up, but when I open it on the second machine, an icon for my neighborhood actually shows up (82KCR) and when I open that, it shows that PC.

As I?ve said, I really DO NOT know what the hell is going on here.

Please, if anyone could offer any advice at all, I?d be extremely grateful. Thank you very much!

:(

I'm a little groggy this morning, but I've been in your shoes before, and would have welcomed any advice at all. Here's a few random thoughts:

- Make sure both PCs are in the same workgroup, under "identification".

- Make sure the Primary logon is set to Client For Microsoft Networks.

- Install NetBeui (I think that might be spelled wrong). It's a protocal designed for sharing files over small networks.

- Check out these two websites: Practically Networked, and Home PC Lan. Both have excellent step-by-step walkthroughs.

Goos Luck!

<< - Make sure both PCs are in the same workgroup, under "identification". >>

Yep, that's done thanks :)

<< - Make sure the Primary logon is set to Client For Microsoft Networks. >>

Ok, done, although before I always used to have it set as 'microsoft family logon (which meant I didn't have to see the logon screen for Win98..)

<< - Install NetBeui (I think that might be spelled wrong). It's a protocal designed for sharing files over small networks. >>

- ok, where do I get this from? I'm guessing from one of the sites below perhaps, which I'm going to check out in a minute :)

Thanks, I'll check those links out.

Cheers.

NetBEUI is a protocol...

In network properties <add> <protocol> <microsoft> <netbeui>

Add this then reboot...

Thank you BOTH so much! :D

Here was a crucial paragraph from the home PC Lan site:

<< When Windows restarts, it will ask for a username and password. You MUST specify a user and then click OK. Without clicking ok...you will NOT be signed onto the network and the machines will not recognize each other!! >>

hehe, I hadn't been putting in a password, I'd just been clicking OK and loading it. Strange...that used to work fine before I got the hub :)

Oh well, thanks again guys, you've saved my bacon. Things are fine now.

What would I do without this place?! :D
