Hi,

I decided to switch to 98SE from ME because of some issues with DMA and the HDD. I installed 98SE from a restore CD from my computer manufacturer, but now I can't get it to shutdown. It hangs at the splash screen where it says 'Windows is shutting your computer down'. Any suggestions?

I'm sure you've already tried all these (they are the oldest tricks in the book), but what you should do is...

Run msconfig, click on the Startup tab, disable non-essential (make sure you only disable what you don't need for windows to run correctly ;) ) programs. If you have patience, you can determine which particular program (by the process of elimination) is hanging windows when it tries to shut down.

Also on the General tab you might first try clicking Advanced and disabling Fast Shutdown.

Good luck!

AFAIK there was bug in Win98(SE) that caused computer to hang during shutdown. I've seen it happening countless times on several computers. Just press the power button when it is on that state: no filesystem corruption should be occure.

Just run windows update, the patch should be there for you to download and install.

Yeah, I tend to get the same crap every now & then. Just shut the thing off anyway - it's fine 99% of cases. Just make sure you're not doing it while HDD's are writing data :).

ONe thing I found when that was happening to me was I was not letting scandisk finish on the startup...once I let scandisk run all the way through my shutdown lockups stopped. Just my .02 worth.
