Win 98 SE and extra memory

Running win98 se and currently 256mg.With the price of memory so low,decided to
add another stick of 256mg.My local computer dealer told me it was a waste because
98 is limited to 256mg.Sounds to me like bunkum,but thought I'd better ask here.Would
I be wasting my money adding memory,if 98 can't use it?
