WIN 98 SE 'ADD Printer' Problem and Others

I recently had to reinstall WIN 98 SE after formating a new hard Drive.
So, I had to start from scratch to add all the peripherals.

First, I installed from CD my standard printer,an Epson 740, which installed and works fine.
Then, I wanted to 'add printer' to install my two other printers.
One is an Epson FX-1050 and the other an IBM PCL 17. All these printers
installed fine before but now I can no longer install any new printers.
When, I started the first new printer install, I got the 'win is making a database' or whatever
but then I get the following message:

Windows was enable to gather file information for this printer. Quit all programs, and then try again. If the problem persistes, restart Windows, and then try again.
OK"

I tried again many times. I don't get the 'making a database...' anymore, just the quoted message above.

I am also having trouble reinstalling my scanner, which worked fine before and also another starnge problem. My CD-RW is only being recognized as a CD-R. When I install a CD-RW
blank, I keep getting the message that the drive is 'locked'!!

I can't believe the problems that I am having with this WIN 98 SE install.

Any advice would certainly be appreciated.

Thanks,

Len
