Win 98 on new system.........

Hey all. I'm bored, home after surgery and thought of something new and fun to try but want to find out about it's feasability first......

OK, I do computer work as a career for JGR but had back surgery 3 weeks ago and will be home until March/April most likely. I already have Linux, Free BSD, 2K, XP and a copy of Vista beta but I'm already kinda' bored. I was wondering how feasable it is to try and install Win 98 on a new system. As in new I mean an X2, A64 or P4 Prescott. I have systems with each. I did an initial search for drivers and most seem to be available (Creative SB Audigy Plat., NIK, Board, etc.) but does anyone know if it actually works reasonbly well?

LOL! That's true for sure.......I guess I'm just being nostalgic and like I said........I'm bored to death already........

 
Basically yes it will work, but you wont be able to take full advantage of the hardware (for example on that dual core, obviously the second core will just sit idle).

You might want to grab a Vmware Workstation demo and play with it, sounds like you might love it.

I would say no. Ive tried this with my duallie system and it didnt go down too well, i have no way to connect to the internet as windows 98 dosent wanna recognise my network key, and the lan connector although having drivers for windows 98 dosent actually work with windows 98, i.e. the drivers for win 98 told me they werent designed for it 😕 I think they just say "for 95/98/ME/2000/XP" and hope that noone actually tries the first three 🙁

But your hardware isnt mine 🙂 so give it a shot, what harm can it do?
 
I have installed (to keep legacy hardware and software going) 98 on many new motherboards and intentionally choose simpler chipsets and in most cases new drivers are easily available, the exception being USB 2, and 98 works fine - did one only yesterday. But it will not recognize dual cores as such - and dont see the point - in a work environment dual cores are useless.
 
Ah I may been a little rash - I am checking out two P4 systems one with a 630 and other with a 821 (?? or maybe something else) for CAM/Office apps etc and at least to my untrained eye the 630 with HT definitely appears to be more responsive, and completes complex operations in less time- the CAM software is a year old so it may not be fully utilizing the dual core capability - like other software not created specifically for dual core processors.
 
I thought Win98 started having lots of problems when the processor speeds got up and above 2ghz.

I tried to put it on a P4 2.4GHz once and the thing didn't run well at all! Had a dongle for a specific program that did not support 2000 or XP, so it was either 98 or NT 4.
