I copied (thank goodness) the contents of my win 98SE cd onto my HDD. Howevert, my cd-rom got destroyed thanks to my nephew. My questioj is this: Can I get the CD key from the installed OS in case i need to re-install (a very likely possibility with windows) ?

It's in the registry somewhere - search the forums, someone posted the answer within the last 2 weeks. Turned into a good flame war, BTW. Sorry, I don't remeber the exact answer.

Eaier than that. Go to Control Panel, System icon, double-click, your CD Key should be right there on screen.

Also, keep in mind that the CD-Key isn't built into your actual CD at all. There is a built-in "detection" code to keep you from randomly entering numbers, but ANYBODYS CD-Key from the same build will work.

Look at:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ProductKey
Your key is there

clause, the CD-Key is not on the CD itself but usually on the CD jacket or product certificate. but since you have an installed copy, use Ark's method above.
