Win 98 and Win 2000 login problem - Please help!

I have a problem where I work. we have a small 5 computer network w/ win 2000 server and 98 on the clients. One computer can't login in properly though all the time (i'll call it ray).
most of the time when ray logs in w/ correct username and password the error message "cannot connect to server..." but he can access the internetand send/receive email fine. the network shows up as inaccessable in network neighborhood.

if on the win 2000 server I look at who is logged on, out of the four other users, there are three users that have double entries in the list. If I force them off the network. I can then logon ray. but as shortly after the other users log back on the second entry for them appears and it kicks ray off again.

I did not setup this network. It was someone else who doesn't work here anymore.
I just want to get it resolved because what this other person can't do W/O being connected to the server gets handed to me to do.

Is the win2k server a dhcp server? It may only be issuing a certain amount of ips, try making the number of dhcp clients greater.

Persistent connection to the server (like mapped drives) is considered one user license to the Server. So, if the number of users signing on is greater than the licenses allowed, some users will be denied access. In NT4, you can add licenses under Control Panel: Licenses. Not sure about Win2k.

Just turn off your licensing logging service. (As long as your are legit)

Right click on "My Computer" and select "Manage". Got to your services and change the license service to manual. ALL FIXED.

I am having a similar problem, but with 2000 & ME. I went into management - service & applications, but couldn't find any opition with licence.
