whenever i hit any tile on the start screen, or for that matter, if i use the down arrow to pull up the entire list of programs and select one from there, the screen goes blank, in the background color, but blank. if i click on it anywhere, it goes back to the tiles. but i can't seem to open anything directly from the start screen. the only exception is the desktop tile, which does take me to the desktop, from which i can run anything i have there normally.

anyone seen something like this or have any thoughts? thx zz03

exactly whats going on here... this machine is for my aged dad who is nearly, but not totally blind via macular degeneration. we are doing most of what he needs from the "desktop", and i'm not a big fan of the tiles anyway, nor is he. but it did not display this behavior when new, pre 8.1, so i'm not sure when the change occured. its not a big hassle, just a curiosity. it seems like when we try to embrace the new interface we have not been rewarded! first impressions....

Hmm... at a elevated command prompt, do sfc /scannow
Hopefully, it will fix the corrupted stuff.
If not, then try Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
then reboot, then do sfc /scannow again.
If still is broken, then reset win 8.1 back to default.
