Win 8.1 lack of screen cast

I've been a windows 8.1 user for a while. I use it on 3 machines. I'm also a Mac user. I actually prefer Windows. It's stable and more compatible.

However I'm looking at MS and their silly stupid miracast system. I have a miracast compatible Panasonic TV and I've never gotten it to work.

I also have a Win 7 HTPC and a Win 8.1 Gaming PC connected to my TV and other display I use for group viewing. However I really need a way that I can show people my personal laptop screen on the main display. And this applies also to guests who want to do the same from their personal windows 8.1 laptops/tablets/convertibles.

All of us also use iPhones and I have an Apple TV. So casting from that ecosystem is so simple and so easy. Sometimes we need to do the same from windows products. It's a no brainier that given the new more consumer friendly MS that we should be able to do this from one Win 8 machine to another. Especially given that there isn't a miracast device worth a damn in the world as it stands. And seriously even at $99 I'm not interested in occupying another HDMI input. Good HDMI switchers are expensive. Why not just PC to PC? Why is this so hard?
