Win 8.1 How do I get windows apps back?

lozina

Lifer
I dont mind 8.1 except for the full screen apps - how effin' stupid!

How do I make my windows apps behave like actual windows instead of full screen apps again with MINIMAL EFFORT/MODIFICATION ???

Simple apps like sound recorder, photo viewer, etc... Ugh why full screen it makes me want to stab Bill Gates with sharpened RAM sticks like a geek's homemade shiv

You'll have to upgrade to Win10 to get the ability to run Metro / Modern apps in a window.

MS was going to release that ability (plus the new start menu with tiles) as Win 8.1 Update 2, but they cancelled that idea, and now they're just going to release it as Windows 10.

For the Modern/Metro Apps, as VirtualLarry said, would have to wait for Win10, or use desktop version of the apps instead of the Metro/Modern versions. I believe some/most of the defaults to the Metro apps but that can be changed

Or for $5 you can use the following Stardock application called
ModernMix they do offer a 30day trial

Now I have not used it personally.

Why would you want to run Metro apps on the desktop in a window when there are desktop apps that are better designed for it?

For photos you can right click on the picture and go to "open with" and then choose windows photo viewer instead of the default photos app. Not sure on sound recording as I don't do that.

Are there any others you are having an issue with? The calculator and paint were two that I had issues with when I first got Win8.

I have both Start8 and ModernMix on my new computer, which you can get as a combo for $8. MM works pretty well, although there are still issues if you resize the window too small. But at least it makes these apps at least somewhat useable. I do really like the Netflix app, though.
