Win 7 - XP Mode - Novell Netware

I was wondering if anyone could give me a little input on a situation.

I would love to upgrade my work computer from XP to Windows 7. Currently all our shared folders & personal document space is handled by Novell Netware shares (and a rather old version at that, sorry I don't have a version number on me) at login. Without Novell, I won't have access to documents and folders that I need to have, so my question is if running XP mode might allow Novell to be loaded up and give me access.

Our IT guy is too busy to attempt to set this up himself, but he's fine with me giving it a try. I just don't know if this is a fool's errand or not, which is why I was looking for a little feedback.

Why do you need to change? It wouldn't add anything important to a work computer and it just might break stuff.

Home systems = latest and greatest
Work system = if it works, it's perfect

I found some where this statement.

"Novell Client 2 for Windows Vista/2008 (IR1a) seems to work for us on Win 7.
Need to put ip and not a tree name but think that was only problem".

Thank you for the advice. Binky, I suppose I've talked myself in to how new features in Windows 7 would make me more productive, I could see jumplists, among other features, working really well with my workflow. Also, I admit I get a little engaged in the challenge of any project. It very well may be worthwhile to stick with what works. Jack, appreciate the info... I've a second box I can work on without wiping my main computer, and if I get a slow day I still might give this a try just to see what happens.

I'd expect it to work. Novell would see XP and an Intel 21140 Ethernet adapter, which it'd likely support.

Here's a statement on the Novell Forums:

http://forums.novell.com/novell-pro...lder-versions/392388-windows-7-nw-3-11-a.html (See the third post in that thread.)

"If you have Professional, Enterprise, or Ultimate edition of W7,
the Netware 3.11 is supported via "XP Mode":"

More Novell Forum comments on Netware client inside XP Mode:

your IT guy is a moron. letting general users upgrade their own workstations to untested operating systems and/or software is a horrible idea thats practically begging to lead to some kind of pain in the ass troubleshooting down the road.

as it is, the novel client works fine on windows 7 for logins, and mapping network shares works fine. im not sure that zen desktop manager works properly, were not pushing out windows 7 at school because while the novel login works fine, something else about it is apparently finicky with windows 7, i just cant recall the issue right now.

Thanks for the additional posts and info.

xSauronx, I understand (and agree) with the reasoning behind your post. There are a couple of reasons I'm given a little bit of leeway in experimenting with things like this, and we are interested in the results of a test-case to judge the feasibility of doing a larger-scale upgrade. While I don't have the expertise of everyone here, I maintain a subset of our equipment and sometimes help out with the larger network when I'm able.
