I noticed in Win 7 in Windows explorer when you click on a .exe on the toolbar you'll see the words 'Open' appear so you can open the .exe but it has no Windows .exe icon associated with it.

Personally I can't believe for the all the looks they put into Windows 7 someone would of forgotten this and didn't place in the default exe icon that's always been used in Windows.

Anyone know how to associate an icon with this?

Here's a screen shot:

There is supposed to be a default folder icon. I can't remember where the Windows Icons are stored.

Have you tried simply restarting or at least restarting Explorer.exe (<- I don't recommend that method)?

This is on a new install of Win 7, the OS has been restarted a few times...

That icon is correct. It's the "executable" icon. That image next to open changes depending on the file selected (and the associated app).

That is not an executable icon in Windows 7 that's a mistake.

Take a look at this screen shot, I circled the .exe files in red, what the icons looks like in Windows 7:

That file icon look you are talking about is just for various, miscellaneous files in Windows.
