Win 7 starting from sleep mode w/ SSD

Guys, was curious if when you have a Win 7 machine in sleep mode with an SSD and bring it back... is it pretty quick?
with my normal HD, the process takes sooo long to be active... im talking 5 minutes or so. even with my i5, 4gb ram,etc,etc.

would an SSD eliminate that bottleneck?
 
Yes, but 5 minutes sounds like too long.

My understanding is that all the info is copied out of memory, and put on storage when entering sleep. To wake, the HDD must spool up, than all the info must be sent back to the memory. I'm not sure how exactly it works, but it makes sense to write the info from memory in one long file. This would make both the write, and read, essentially a sequential operation. Once spooled up, the HDD wouldn't be too far behind an SSD in this situation. Perhaps your HDD is too full and so fragmented, that there is no place big enough to write a single sequential file from all the stuff in memory. In this case, the access time on a HDD will kill you, as it must read many small pieces from several places on the disk. Maybe that's not the way it works, but I suggest making sure your drive is not fragmented, and see if that cuts your time from 5 minutes.

For me, with my Intel 80GB SSD, coming out of sleep is however long it takes the monitor to display my desktop. Usually, 2 to 4 seconds.
 
Are you talking about sleep -- where a lower power state is entered, but RAM data is not read to hard drive, or hibernating -- where RAM data is written to hard drive and system is powered off? In either case, five minutes is too long.

Coming out of hibernation with an SSD is much faster than coming out of hibernation with a HDD, but I never timed it. I'd say maybe with an SSD it takes about 50% of the time?

Coming out of sleep with either an SSD or a HDD should be pretty quick, and I doubt the SSD affects the speed much, since it's just a matter of re-energizing the system rather than booting up and writing RAM contents from SSD/HDD back to RAM.

Oh, I just remembered, "hybrid sleep" does do some writing to the disk ... is that what you mean?
 
Yeah its definitely hibernation, thanks for the clarification. Sleep is pretty quick.
I have my PC set to goto sleep after 30 min then hibernate after 2 hours.

I guess I will try cleaning out the OS drive and defragging it, if that doesnt work then I am going to buy an SSD.
 
Hibernation seems like a waste. I leave mine in SLEEP if i am not using it. It only draws maybe 7 watts in sleep mode and I have it attached to a UPS as well incase of power failures.
 
Hibernation takes around as long as booting the computer, and if you have a ton of RAM it can take LONGER than booting a computer. The only good thing is that once back into Windows, everything is as you left it.

Have you tried S3 sleep? Can power on in seconds (literally 2-3 seconds with an SSD, a few seconds more with HDD for spinup). I've tested a few new builds I've done recently and they all take less than 5W while in sleep. None were gaming rigs, so I don't know how a high end graphics card would react. Also, you need proper BIOS support.
 
Hey Spaceman, glad you're playing around with sleep modes. You can achieve instant on with it. Hey Zap, it's like Deja-vu. Seems like we both are championing S3 sleep.

With a default install of Vista and 7, I think hybrid sleep or sleep after 30 then hibernate after a longer period is set by default. I usually turn those off right away. Once you do, you can have instant-on.

It won't matter whether you have a HDD or SSD, as long as it sleeps to RAM and doesn't hibernate (sleep to disk) you can come out of it instantly... at least with computers from the past 7 years. Have fun.
