Win 7 RC to Retail (32 to 64)

So, I have been using the Win7 RC (32 bit) for the last several months and very recently I started getting the msg that I should backup since it will expire in a few days. (I thought it was good til the summer?)

Anyway, found out I could get Win7 through my university on the cheap so I bought the 64-bit version even though they told me it was only the upgrade.

My question is, what is the best way to install this? I'm basically doing a rebuild anyway...

Was thinking of maybe dual booting with ubuntu or mint but kind of crossed that idea out.

Last time I clean installed the RC and I would prefer to do the same here. Do I need to install XP 64 (I think I have this somewhere) first or another 64bit version of windows like Vista or what?

If it doesn't have to be 64bit, is it better to "upgrade" from XP or Vista?

If I have XP installed, will there maybe be an option to perform a clean install, since it will see I have a valid windows license?

Your help is appreciated. 🙂

Damn, can someone please move this to the OS forum??

Thanks

You're welcome 🙂

I think you can "upgrade" from the RC.
The installer is not smart enough to recognize it as "trialware".

If I remember correctly, ubuntu is better at recognizing other OSs and creating a boot menu for them ... so you might want to install that second (make sure that still holds true for Win7 though!)

The upgrade (or regular edition) of Win 7 will Not upgrade the RC.

In general you are better Off doing fresh install of Win 7 x64.

However you have to make a list of the must use applications, and check that they are all compatible with x64.

Some games and superficiality applications might not be compatible with x64, and need an installation of x86.

Not quite true.

The installer has an entry that allows upgrade only from versions that are above the 7100 which the version number of the RC.

It will not perform an in-place upgrade, to keep your programs or settings, but it will do a "license upgrade", a "custom" install, which copies your existing windows to WINDOWS.OLD, and performs a fresh install.
