win 7 pro or home

You didn't say what you will use it for. Have you looked at the feature comparison to see if you have any use for Pro's extra features?

Offhand, there's really no reason NOT to get W7 Professional if it's the same price. Well, maybe one: In a few years when you update to the next OS, you may have to do a clean install of the new OS if you can't find a good deal on the "Pro" equivalent.

Basically, Win 7 Pro equates to Vista Business. You can compare all the features at Microsoft's site. The big thing you get with 7 Pro is "XP Mode," as well as more networking options.

No. The main reasons to go Pro are remote desktop, Win XP compatibility mode, and domain networking. If you don't need these, then it's not worth the extra price. If they're the same price, then you might as well get Pro.

As I understand it, Pro does not lack any features of HP, so there's not much reason to go HP if Pro is the same price.

I got the Windows 7 Ultimate for free, by doing the Microsoft Launch Event.

I have vista home prem now. They are both $30, but I am wondering if I should bother with pro.

If they both will cost you the same, get Pro. It has all the home features plus a few more.

Okay.. got pro $35 shipped. Full version according the ms guy who asked if I wanted full or upgrade. I got full. Also I guess 32 and 64bit both come on the dvd. Very nice. Hopefully nothing missing from pro that would hamper gaming.

There should be 2 DVD's in the retail package. One for 32 bits and the other for 64 bits. Same key for either one.

This. They just did a review in Maximum PC and that's pretty much what they said. Unless you are connecting to a domain, home is plenty.

I also read that some of the performance benchmarks are LOWER with Win 7, so it would be worth going to a bookstore and browsing through the magazine if you don't have a subscription. They tend to fluctuate 10% either way with both games and programs, really strange.

I really want to upgrade but am going to wait for a bit more info after the release. (I am currently vista x64)
