Hi,

I thought that I'd install Win7 on a new hard drive to make sure I didn't screw anything up on my current XP setup.

So I plug in the drive (3rd drive, set as Secondary Slave), format at NTFS and try to install, but Windows 7 says in can't install to this drive with no explanation given.

Anyone have an idea why?

Thanks.

sounds like its not marked as active, boot flag. you need to flag that part as active

Thanks KeypoX.
Can there be more than one active partition? I was thinking I could just select it in the bios as the first boot device when I wanted to load Win7.

Yeah i can do it that way with my bios, but if your other HD is plugged in it overwrite the bootloader. BCD in win7/vistas case. This would be ok and XP would be added to the boot menu

i would check google on some dual boot guides. You may want to look at them before you install anything.

I am pretty sure if you install windows 7 on another partition or hard drive. With XP installed FIRST! windows7 will automatically add xp to its boot loader giving you a choice on which OS to boot from.

Im trying to get Window7 and OSX to dual boot right now lol

Thanks for the info. I used to boot Linux and Windows by selecting the boot disk in the BIOS. Forgot that two Windows installs are not nearly as easy!
