Win 7 on a Dell disaster

HI
Quick post before I go to bed.
Bought a dell laptop and part of the purchase was the win 7 upgrade
I waited 3 months to do the upgrade.
I started with the upgrade assistance disk.
Went to !@# from there.
The upgrade program tried to remove the AI Catalyst software.
Something went wrong.
I can still see that software in the programs/features window and when I use the remove feature there I get a error message.
Got Dell on the line and 4 hours later and 3 so called tech agents they could not fix the problem.
Their advice it to recover back to day one on the laptop and if that does not work do a clean install.
Is there a way to just remove all the ATI files???
This is the third time Dell support has !@# this laptop.
2:45am and time for bed
Will log on later.
Upgrade assistant still sees working ati files.

Do you have any idea what those three Dell folks already tried?

One common starting point is to re-install the drivers and then try to remove them.

I see that "Driver Sweeper" is also made to remove leftover driver files:

Note that I've never used the above program.

For the future, it's a really good idea to have current system backups before attempting a major system upgrade. Heck, it's always a good idea to have recent system backups anyway. Having those can turn a major disaster into a much smaller deal.

This is what you should do:

1.) Save all of your important data.
2.) Wipe the hard disk.
3.) Install Windows 7 Upgrade ( without the DVD Key )
4.) Reinstall ( upgrade ) Windows 7 to Windows 7 and use the DVD Key.
5.) Install Drivers from the Upgrade Assistance Disk.
6.) Install all applications and restore your saved Data.

This method will take more time, but will give you a MUCH Better experience. This is basically a repeat of the experience when Vista came out.

no problems with nvidia - studio 19 multitouch AIO - vista prem 64bit to win 7 premium - flawless. was very impressed.

If he already has XP or Vista installed, why not just boot from the Windows 7 DVD and choose a clean install (rather than wipe, install, install). I used that exact technique with a Windows 7 upgrade DVD.

well i know the trick with vista upgrade was you had to install it as upgrade then clean install after that. didnt know win7 had same technique but very cool as i dont want to buy windows 7 full edition if can do it this way.

Just my pet peeve. The cleaner the better. Just me!

HI
I apologize for taking so long to get back here. I had to do a system recovery and take the laptop back to day one to get rid of the junk ATI garbage.
Once I did that the upgrade went well. Adding new win7 drivers for the network printer went well and the new drivers solved some problems I had with the old HP printer driver.
So far the laptop is working. Next week I will tackle a Dell desktop upgrade to win7. If you see a UPO in the sky next week you will know it is the desktop and the upgrade didn't go well!! LOLOLOL
