So I've got problems with my DVD (Samsung SH-S162L) drive in Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit on a MSI 785GM-E65 mobo. When DMA is enabled, I've got problems reading DVDs, both data and movies. It just hangs until I pop the disk out.
Audio CDs seem to work fine. When I turn of DMA, and drop it into PIO it can access the disks without problem but not fast enough to avoid choppiness during DVD playback. This drive works fine when I boot the system into XP MCE.
I don't think it's a hardware issue as it works in XP MCE (but I've swapped cables anyways to no avail). I don't have any of the lower / upper filter registry keys that google suggests might be the problem. Windows can't find any newer drivers for my drive or mobo. I've tried uninstalling the drive and IDE controller in Device Manager and letting it reinstall. I've done so with FrogASPI (renamed) present. I am using the 9.10 Cats but the change log for the 9.11 version doesn't mention any fixes.
On a side note, I had a really difficult time installing Windows 7 off the DVD. I suffered from the really long load time problem lots of people run into (around 30 minutes to get to that setup part). Plus it got hung up at the expanding files part. After a day or so, I figured out that the install would finish flawlessly when I took the DVD out of the drive once Windows 7 finished copying what it needed into memory and reached the setup part. Again, Windows 7 appears to be working perfectly aside for this DVD DMA drive issue.
Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?
