My Windows 7 goes into blue screen on shutdown but only when I shut down in the morning. I know it did because later in the day when I'll use the computer, it's powered on with a small window saying "Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown".

Clicking "View problem details" shows:

How do I read the .dmp file? Will it tell me what is causing the blue screen? Shutting down at night and any other time of day is fine.

Thanks a lot.

I configured Windows to write small dump file. I'll have to wait tomorrow morning (it's night where I am now) to read the dump file when the crash occurs. I'll update this with the results. Thanks a lot.

Or you could just go on your computer at 11:59 PM and reset the clock to noon every day.

Solved. I have 2 USB devices that I disable through "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the system tray before shutting down in the am. (MP3 player and USB harddrive.) When I didn't bother disabling the USB devices and just went straight to shutting down Windows 7, it shut down properly -- that is it powered off without BSOD.

(Thanks, UpstartXT -- before finding the solution, I actually tried putting a shutdown command in autoexec.bat set for after 3 hours, so when it BSOD'ed while I'm out for the day, it would shut down after 3 hours.)

Haha I was trying to be a bit of a jerk but glad it helped.

A couple of years ago I had an external usb wireless adapter that would randomly cause blue screens. Took forever to figure out it was that.
