I have Win 7 on an ASUS k50ij laptop .
Pressing F8 on boot does not get it into Safe Mode - just boots normally .
From Disk properties- Tools-Error Checking , if I select to do system disk check on next boot , again , it'll just boot normally .
Why is this ?
From msconfig-Boot , I can force it to boot into Safe Mode . Is there some way from msconfig , or other , to boot into the pre-Windows screen , which will enable a manual disk check ?
Thanks .

I found solutions of sorts for F8 on another forum .
1. Space Bar instead of F8.
2. Alternately depress and release F8 a few times per second , instead of holding it down all the time ( this worked for me ) .
I then managed to enter DOS and ran Chkdsk from there .
Still would prefer to do it automatically - any ideas anyone ?

The F8 thing has always been a PITA since MS never added a prompt, you've just got bang on it and hope you get lucky.

The F8 function is tied to the OEM and the BIOS, and especially with notebooks, it can vary. That should appear on screen during the boot process before Windows ever starts loading. I have found that tapping F8 has always been better on most systems.

ChkDsk can be set up in the Command Prompt to run on boot.

I think you're thinking about the BIOS boot menu. Windows has supported hitting F8 at some exact moment during the splash screen in order to get a boot menu since Win95 and I think it did something else (step-by-step confirmation maybe?) in Win3.x.

If the BIOS has an entry to support the Keyboard/mouse though the BIOS (as oppose to OS), enable it.
