PCGH Win 7 x64 Beta Review

Doesn't really get into features/improvements, just performance benches. Cliffs:

  • Marginally faster than Vista in the 2 games tested, 1-2 FPS
  • Boot-up time slower than Vista
  • Marginally faster in 2 apps tested
  • Faster copy times (~10%) and network transfer speeds (marginal)

Boot times will improve with RTM. The main thing here is that the beta builds will have a lot of debugging code still in them, particularly with services and bootup. It may not be to terribly much faster, but it will get faster with RTM.

Pretty much expected from what everyone is saying or has used Windows 7. Also worth noting that this review picked up on the responsiveness W7 has over Vista, which will be a major plus point for many people who disliked Vista, although realistically Microsoft is not going to win everyone over.

In DirectX 10 mode Far Cry 2 is about 6 percent faster on windows 7 x64 Beta 1. But if we launch the game with the DX9 render path, Windows Vista SP1 x64 reached the higher fps rate.

Interesting, wonder how much drivers and RTM will improve performance in Win7,it'll be very interesting to see Win7 final against Vista SP2 final.
