Win 7 - annoying/weird CRT problem *FIXED read

Until I decide on what nice lcd I want (sold the one I had) I'm stuck using an old 19 inch Samsung CRT which despite it's lack of screen space looks pretty good for gaming and whatnot. Due to some eyestrain problems I've been having while reading in Vista I run it at 1024x768 and all is fine and dandy. When I try to do this in Win 7, something really weird happens. It draws my 1024x768 desktop inside of the 1280x1024 resolution my CRT is meant to be used at with black bars around the whole thing. I haven't been able to find any setting to adjust this. Therefore I've been forced to run 7 at a higher resolution than I'd like and increase my font size instead. This is working okay but I feel I should be able to use my CRT like I do in Vista. Any ideas? I have an Nvidia gpu with the latest driver. Thanks.

Looks like WIN 7 is assuming an LCD using Super XGA or Extended VGA and the CRT is Standard IBM XGA.

Go to the advanced settings of your video properties and see if you can change the monitor type to Standard VGA. Also, check the Adapter Tab & see if there is a "List All Modes" that would provide selection of the required resolution.

Finally, ensure that the monitor has not just simply reset itself to some factory default settings.
Check the monitors adjustments menus to determine if the issue is simply that you need to adjust the width & height of the monitor PIX from the CRT's menu system. (If so, hopefully it will remember its settings between reboots.)

thanks for your suggestions but unfortunately I had no luck. My crt is showing up as a generic PnP monitor. Windows seems to know all of its proper resolutions and refresh rates but won't change the actual resolution of the crt. wonder if it could be a driver issue.

heres a 2007 driver that "57% of downloaders said worked in Vista"

At the very least you are going to have to load it somehow, since the inf contains all reso

Apparently the CRT isnt a PNP monitor, and this prob does occur with others

I dont know how a CRT would work with a current nvidia control panel - but normally there is a tab with 4 options for "changing LCD scaling" when using a resolution lower than the monitor native

samsung site itself has older driver (1.0)

I couldn't get those drivers to install. Something is definitely up though cause I tried switching to a lower resolution in a game and it was scaled to fill the whole screen like it would on an lcd while my actual resolution remained at the default.

Hmm...do any scaling options show up in your video card's control center? If so, maybe you can try messing with those to see what happens.

no none at all. that is the first place I looked as it seems to think my crt is an lcd.

Just to let everyone know someone on another board recommended I try the 182.50 Vista drivers and those DID FIX the problem. Now I am able to use all the resolutions I'm used to without any scaling issues.
