Win 7/8 networking and WMC

Just bought a homerunprime unit. As my storage pc in my network is still on XP and having to be running at least 7, thinking about going with 8 while it is cheap to use on it.

Will there be any difficulties in adding the 8 machine into the network.

Have not used WMC before, but will there be any problems with accessing the tuners and recordings on a networked 7 or xbox from the 8 WMC?

On a semi-related item, with my current storage machine being turned into full time media center, was thinking about making a new one. I've found that I can get a free copy of server 2012, any experience or advice/warnings on using it as a home storage server?

When it comes to accessing recordings, keep in mind that WMC has to follow whatever copy flags are set with the program. If it's copy-once, then I believe you won't be allowed to watch them on anything other than the computer that made the recording.

The good news is that Xbox integration is rather straightforward, thanks to the MCE Extender concept.

Correct, and copy-once material will play on any MCE device attached to the WMC instance that initially recorded it. I don't know if it is cable provider specific, or channel specific, but the only ones in my area that use copy-once are the premium movie channels (HBO, and the others that are not bundled with the normal packages).

However, my design is 1 HTPC and the rest Xboxes, copy-once makes no difference because I can play it on all the other TVs because they are MCEs.

MS should really release MCE software for PCs so that we could have multiple HTPCs subordinate to a master HTPC that would handle all recording.

yes yes and yes. Not sure why they haven't made it so you could have a pc act as an extender in the same network...if it's to get around some copy protection issue it's not really valid anymore as well as people are able to hack 360's now.

as for the flag settings, I've come across some post about TWC being liberal in putting most stuff copy once and their is fear with the fcc revision recently that others may do the same.
