Win 7 64 bit vs 32 bit

Last month I changed mobos and decided to install the 64 bit version of Win 7 since it should be faster than the 32 bit version I was using. Instead, the system felt less responsive so I thought perhaps the new mobo was to blame. Last weekend I changed to a clean install of Win 7 32 bit and the system seems more responsive. Does running 32 bit apps in a 64 bit OS incur some kind of performance penalty? Just browsing through folders in explorer seemed somehow less snappy so I'm thinking the OS might have been the issue. Anyone else notice this?

I can only speak regarding Vista, but I didn't notice a difference whatsoever going from 32bit to 64bit. If somebody had switched while I was at work or something, it would have been months before I realized my O/S had changed.

There are situations that x64 is needed.

As an example.

Like if you have a special professional application that use every day for real work and it was optimized for x64 processing.

If one uses the OS for multi-virtual hosting and need more memory than the max of x32.

However we are on an Enthusiasts Forum and many Enthusiasts quest are a matter of Being Cool, and Wishfull Thinking (like a computer with PSU x3 times the wattage than what is needed is better than a regular capable PSU).

So on an Enthusiasts Forum x64 is better, Period. :hmm:

i won't agree. there are many business apps that just don't work - if you are business conducting person 🙂.

i'd say 6 to 8 gb is where you need to look at 64bit. my desktop gives me 3.4gb with a cheapo video card. loss of .6gb in trade for application compatibility - not so cool.

WOW*32 mode does have some limitations iirc. i will have to get back to you on that one.

I've heard that the 64 bit version of windows shines at 8gb and up. This seems to be confirmed in my office - I have some users who have 4gb (me! 😡) and some with 8. Their systems are much better performing when I benchmark.

Got all the proper drivers so that's OK. I wonder if 8GB of ram is really needed for Win 7 64. Seems I've heard that too so I'll check it out.

ram is cheap. 8gb + X25-m = bliss.

except for having to deal with 32bit and 64bit (IE/flash/java) you end up with more management nightmare.

plus 64bit you can not run unsigned drivers - which means hacked drivers or some low end drivers just aren't going to happen.

so if you don't need 64bit - i suggest stay away.

office 2010 64bit = more ram but not compatible with 32 bit plugins and some vba
av - some stuff just blows up on 64bit still - especially NAC and USB control and some firewall hooks
