I have a machine that consists of a amd 1700 xp+ and a Biostar MB M7VIB 40 gig hard drive and 512 ddr ram.
I also have a Maxtor 10 gig drive with red hat. When the red hat drive is used as the master it works fine but when changed to slave and slaved to the main drive it will be seen by the bios but windows does not see it and the machine boots extremely slow. I think that the small maxtor is ATA 66, i dont think this would make any difference. New cables,(round) good strong PS, I have 4 drives on the machine one of which is a ZIP as slave to the main drive, all I did was replace the ZIP drive with the 10 gigger.
Anyone have any idea what is going on here?

Im not sure if it's the same with Maxtor drives, but I know with my Western Digitals, I have the same problem if there is no jumper on the master drive. It is okay to have no jumper if it's the only HDD (it's automatically master), but the slave drive won't be detected if there is no jumper on the master. Otherwise I'm out of ideas. Good Luck!

Thanks that is a really good suggestion, I will pull out the other drive and set a jumper. The other drive is a WD maybe they just dont play very good together.

Thanks again

Sounds like a problem I had with my WD 40 gig HD and a IBM HD. The WD did not like it when I set the IBM drive to slave. I had the same slowness, no detection problems despite the bios saying otherwise. I tried the jumpers also but it didn't work for me. I took the IBM drive out and the Wd was happy again. Do you have a controller card to try it on? Is it on the same IDE cable?

Is it on the same IDE cable
Yes.
I am in the process of pulling out the master HD now. I am not sure that there is a way to jumper the WD to master.

Well that did not work either. I also tried cable select and no workie. I guess I will try it on the 2nd IDE port and slave my CD burner to it and slave my DVD to the HD that has windows on it.
What a pain in the postierier.
Thanks for all the advice.
